In Praise of the F Word (Mary Sherry) - Newsweek
In the article "In Praise of the F Word, Mary Sherry teaches basic grammar and writing in a night class for high-school graduates and high-school dropouts, who are intent on pursuing graduate-equivalent certificates for skills that should have been learned while in high school. She also speaks about how many of her students were involved in activities that they felt should have been stopped by someone and not themselves. She then discusses how some of her students were not mischievous or unmannered, just quite; these students were passed because of their manners and quietness.
In Praise of the F Word - The Huffington Post
Mary Sherry, the author of "In Praise of the F Word," teaches English grammar at night to adult students who dropped out of high school or who graduated without learning how to read and write well enough to keep a job. Her own son, when he was a senior in high school, nearly flunked English until his teacher threatened him with failure and he turned his semester around.
Mary Sherry’s essay entitled “In praise of the F word” discusses the reality within the ways of passing students in school. Sherry points out that the students could obtain their diploma, even if they do not know how to write or read. According to her research, students think that they are being cheated by their academic environment because they graduated even if they are not really prepared to face the next phase of their lifetime especially those who are high school graduates. That is why the employers could not hire these students and they remain jobless despite of the fact that they already pass their schooling. Education is a tool for each one of us to face the challenges of the society. If we are not educated well, we will lose the game of life. Sherry’s point is very important to understand the struggle and adversities of students after they graduated in high school because in reality, they feel unworthy of the diploma they received. Therefore, Sherry’s article is a revelation of truth behind the happy thoughts of students as they face the society without certain knowledge on their education.
